
Design Miami / Basel announces its 14th edition with the Curatorial Director, Aric Chen's Theme of the Elements: Earth /
DesignMiami / Basel returns from June 11 to 16, 2019, for its fourteenth edition, with forty-two galleries from twelve countries and thirteen Curios, the program of largest curiosities to date. This year's fair will be the first directed by Aric Chen, who was appointed Curatorial Director in 2019. Chen is the first to be appointed to the newly created annual position, which he will oversee exhibitions, commissions and collaborations in Basel and Miami Beach.
On Choosing Elements: Earth for the theme of the Basel fair, Chen said, "I don't it's just the role of design in exploring materials, and ways of doing, living, consuming and producing what has acquired a new urgency through as our impact on the planet becomes all too clear. The design and designers also help articulate the future, and this year we want highlight what designers are seeing as human activity it continues to alter the very nature of the Earth.”
Next Five highlights are presented ahead of the upcoming fair, including Design at Large, the central manifestation of Chen's curatorial theme.

The Swarovski Designers of the Future Award
The Swarovski Designers of the Future award returns to Basel for the fifth consecutive year, in honor of young designers or studios promising design projects that will explore the innovation and sustainability of crystals in three categories: lighting, architectural surfaces and home decor.

Galleri Feldt's presentation, based in Copenhagen, was will focus on innovative and innovative Scandinavian design. The highlight will be the very rare Tired Man from 1936 by Flemming Lassen, purchased from original owner in its original upholstery, a chair considered to be a of the most important modernist works of Danish design.
Gio Ponti in the Nilufar Gallery
The selection of vintage and contemporary pieces from the Nilufar Gallery will include the Triennale armchair by Gio Ponti, the iconic expression of his concept of "ultimate form" designed in declared opposition to the modernist dogma of its time and originally exhibited at the IX Triennial of Milan in 1951.
